Tuxedo Style For Women
Men’s Tailored Suiting and Black-Tie Inspires Ladies’ Fashion

Boy-meets-girl dressing gets glamorous, infusing bow ties, cummerbunds, slick suiting and smart trousers into chic styles for women. Find out how to master the tux trend:
The road of masculine-feminine dressing is well-trodden ground this year, with designers plucking menswear classics and inserting them into ladies’ styles. If you’re keen on hopping on the fashion bandwagon this season, look no further than your boyfriend’s side of the closet for inspiration.
Tux Trends on the Runways
New York Magazine’s web profile on Yves St. Laurent reflects on how, with the launch of his label in 1962, the designer changed the face of fashion by dressing women in mannish pant-suits with boxy shoulders, smoking jackets, safari jackets and tuxedos. He masterfully feminized the androgyny with billowy peasant blouses and fitted, flouncy couture gowns in dramatic colors.
Dolce and Gabbana rocked the trend massively in Milan with their Fall 2007 collection, showcasing the über classy tuxedo look with bow-tied tuxedo shirts and smoking jackets mixed with trousers, skirts, and even shorts. And if smoking jackets weren’t luxurious enough, D&G tossed in a bit of leopard print and leather to kick the rock-and-roll factor up a notch.
Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchcovitch – fashioned his entire Spring 2008 collection after a deconstructed tuxedo, saying in a backstage interview with Style.com that he wanted to transform the classic men’s wardrobe, but with feminine gestures that were liberated from the usual clichés.
Despite the fact that the idea of reinterpreting menswear for a female client has been on the minds and catwalks of many designers for quite some time, Herchovitch managed to execute his collection with a healthy dose of originality, taking the typically stuffy black-and-white tuxedo and marrying it with punk details, and lively touches of crimson and chartreuse in sleeveless waistcoats, stand-alone lapels and collars, peg-legged pants, sheer button-up shirts, double-breasted buttoning, boutonnieres, and of course the (somewhat expected) cummerbund-cinched frocks.
How to Wear the Tuxedo Trend
True to Form
- Commit to the tux trend fearlessly by sporting an actual tuxedo to a formal event. You needn’t wear your boyfriend’s penguin suit, though. Many designers make tuxedos tailored specifically for a woman’s curves; this can be sexier than even the most risqué of gowns. Go ultra glam with a tuxedo in winter white.
- Get the look for less with a fitted black jacket, a white ruffled shirt opened to the chest and tailored pants with a silk stripe.
- Funk up a sexy mini-skirt with a button-up white shirt, an inexpensive bow-tie, and black opaque tights. Strap on a corset belt or sash that mimics a cummerbund and you’re ready to go. Keep chills at bay by tossing on a black blazer with tuxes’ trademark satin trim.
Deconstructed Tuxedo
Buy a tuxedo and take it apart, wearing its constituents with other elements in your wardrobe. Here are just a few ideas:
- wear a smoking jacket with your favorite designer jeans
- use a cummerbund as a belt over a sheath dress
- wear silk-striped tuxedo pants with a shimmering halter top
- accessorize the neckline of a strapless dress with an unexpected bow tie
If you can’t commit to buying a full tuxedo to disassemble, look for some of these singular items to incorporate into your own version of tuxedo style.
- satin-striped or full satin trousers
- loose and lean or fitted trousers
- double-breasted buttons
- slick suiting
- bow ties or cravats
- cummerbunds
- slouchy blazers or fitted waistcoats
- vests
- prominent lapels, collars, French cuffs
- boutonnieres

“I looked at a lot of sites before I ordered from yours for my husband’s valentine present - and the bow ties truly are magnificent. maybe the best he’s ever had - and he’s had some wonderful ones over the years. You were also so gracious and responsive to my phonecall when I could not identify the item on the credit card bill. I will definitely be ordering from you in the future - the only issue is restraining myself to not do that too often. You may quote me - cuz you all are a great business!
Erika”
Thanks Erika. We are trying. In fact, Frank is out in Las Vegas right now buying new items that will will have posted soon. Look for our SPRING 2008 collection to be posted this weekend.

This article regarding Bow Ties was from the Associated Press in the January 18, 2008, News Leader. Here are some great quotes from the article entitled “Designers go for elegant look in men’s fashions - Fall-winter wardrobe makes men appear gentlemanly rather than as sex symbols.”
- “Giorgio Armani summed up the feel of the men’s collections . . . gentlemanly”.
- “The show was a class act, everywhere on the Milan runway, elegance was in the air”.
- “Dolce&Gabbana turned their macho man into a proper gentleman by decking him out in tweed. . . and plaids.”
- “Higlights: a white shirt and a black bow tie” [see picture above from the article - Tim]
- “Silvia Venturini - creative director of Fendi. . . [stated] (the) bow tie - in general (is) THE accessory of the season“
- Bow Tie “colors stick to blues and grays, with bursts of red and multicolored plaids”

2008: Bow Ties Come Bouncing Back!
Filed Under Bow Ties | Leave a Comment
My Dear Fellow Bow Tie “brothers”,
On the eve of 2007 coming to a close, I wanted to write a few thoughts of appreciation, acknowledgement and optimism for us as bow tie wearers.
During the past few years, where casual dress (the more distressed the better) at work is more the rule than the exception, there are still some men who are tied to a traditional, highly professional and classy look. I know you’ll agree with me, I know its an identifier for myself, a way of getting recognized. No one ever prays attention to a necktie but someone always says “nice tie” when they see me in my bow tie.
Interestingly, fashion and image-conscious, young along with the older, are increasingly turning to the bow tie as their accessory of choice, particularly in the workplace. This is restoring some respect and professionalism in our communities, which is long overdue. One misconception that I hear regularly is about bow ties are more tricky to tie. Not so, it’s not any more difficult to tie than a necktie. If you can tie a necktie, a bow tie is not going to be beyond you. It’s basically a shoelace tie. Here is a great video from my friend Lucky to show you how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJv4Qh7zR3E
More and more younger men are turning to bow ties thanks to celebrities such as NBC meteorologist Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz, MSNBC talk show host and commentator Tucker Carlson and Eagles football star Dhani Jones (mentioned earlier in this blog), just to name a few. Celebrity-wearers of the bow tie have certainly helped businesses. With younger, highly-visible men wearing bow ties, the stereotypical view of the ties as a fashion accessory just for older gentlemen is going by the wayside, and it’s about time!
Based on this past year, where our sales and visitors to www.bowtiestyle.com increased every single month, it is obvious the image of bow ties is changing, we have a new set of people who are very fashion conscious people. The age range of bow tie wearers is huge, I have quite a few high school kids that absolutely love them. And wearing a bow tie sets a man apart, fans say. Generally the guy that wears a bow tie is a creative person, an intelligent person, an imaginative person. The bow tie also is resurging as a fashion accessory in the workplace for those who want to stand out in a professional way, like architects, doctors, lawyers, executives, men of authority, anyone for that matter.
As this year 2008 begins, we are seeing a lot of companies that went casual in their dress code changing and going back; they recognize that casual doesn’t mean efficient. People feel better about dressing up, taking pride in their appearance. To freshen things up, and maintain a classy, professional and respectable image, many men are now choosing bow ties. It’s good to see men interested in their appearence and it’s importance in the workplace again. This conscioussness has been long overdue.
Well, that is my “two cents” for the end of 2007. I look forward to a great year serving all of you and filling your bow tie needs. In 2008, look for the launch of our very own label, www.bowtiestyle.com . We are already working on this with designers now and we are excited about providing even more option and style for you this year! Keep the feedback and comments coming.
With every good wish for you and yours,
Tim

Everyone that saw the NBA game on Christmas day saw Phil Jackson in his bow tie. I have been reading all kinds of blogs about how so many have not seen Phil in a bow tie before, but actually, at road games (all the way back to his days with the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan), Phil has wore bow ties. He truly likes to set himself apart from looking like everyone else. Good for you Phil! Keep it up.

Even though Dhani Jones will be doing his “renaissance man” thing in another NFL city this fall, assuming someone signs him in the wake of the linebacker’s release yesterday by the Eagles. Fans often felt Jones’ penchant for celebration - complete with “air banjo” playing - exceeded his level of play during his 3 years with the Birds, which followed four seasons with the Giants.
Dhani, you’ll be fine, keep your head up and keep on “setting yourself apart” as a gentleman with your bow tie style! Your a class act.
